Australian parents' concerns with kids screen time

Once kids are ready for their own mobile phone, what worries parents when it comes to their children being online? We chatted to some Aussie mums to find out.

Aussie Mums share their thoughts about kids being online

Almost a quarter (24%) of the Mum's we spoke to said that they see the child's screen-time as a helpful tool for homework, as well as access to educational resources. But as well as understanding the benefits, parents also felt some uncertainty about what content is available online.

Pam, Mum of 2 from Sydney says "I worry about them being exposed to things that they’re not necessarily looking for. So for example when they’re on YouTube. But I also worry about if I take away that technology, then they don’t get to learn how to use it the way all the other friends are using it".

Pam is not alone  - 92% of Mum's said that they would feel more comfortable with giving their kids more access to screen time if they had more information on the type of learning and educational tools for their child to access online.

A common concern Mum's had was online safety - "My main worries would be inappropriate content. Not knowing what's on YouTube, not knowing what's on Instagram, and a bit of cyber-bullying too".

Our research shows that 87% of Australian parents would feel more comfortable with supplying their kids with access to their own mobile or tablet if they had visibility into their social media profiles.

Phones like the FZ One and apps like Family Zone can help parents manage how their kids are spending time online.
