How Aussies use their mobile phones

 

These days it’s hard to imagine life without our mobile phone. Try and think back to the last time you lasted a whole day without even looking at your phone… can’t remember one? You’re not alone. According to the Deloitte Mobile Consumer Survey 2017 - The Australian Cut, 35% of Australians check their phones within 5 minutes of waking up in the morning. The same survey tells us that 88% of Aussie’s now own a mobile phone.

So what is it about our mobile phones that have us so hooked? Let’s take a look at some of the ways we use our phones to see if we can figure it out.
 

Social Media

Whether you like to Snapchat your new haircut, Instagram your morning coffee or fill your Facebook feed with the latest and greatest of what’s going on in your life, it’s pretty safe to say that most of us use social media in one form or another.

Checking social media, instant messages and email are the most popular reasons for using our phones, with the largest growth in the 25-44 age segment*.
 

Streaming TV shows / YouTube / Music

Online shopping

A much-loved past time for many of us, online shopping has never been easier than it is now.

Online purchases in Australia increased 25% from 2016-2017*. With features like tap and go available on our phones now, it’s no surprise that our mobile phones are becoming more a part of the shopping process.
 

Managing everyday life - banking, travel, dining

As with online shopping, managing our finances, travel and dining can be done easily with our trusty smartphones. Roy Morgan research showed that 18.4% of the Australian population travelled by Uber in the 3 month-period leading up to December 2017**. When it comes to banking, the simplicity of managing our finances through a mobile app is a part of everyday life. Mobile phones are becoming more and more popular as a way to manage flights, with 20% of all Australians (18+) using their mobile phone to check into a flight in a 12 month period, according to Sensis e-Business Report 2017.
